Alstom has delivered 18 third-generation Traxx Universal locomotives to CLIP Intermodal, a member of CLIP Group. The locomotives are intended to support the logistics operator as it expands international intermodal services.

The locomotives can operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h and, according to Alstom, can haul heavier freight trains than other locomotives in the same class. Their design is based on a modular platform used in both passenger and freight transport, and is available in AC, DC and multi-system configurations. The locomotive bodies were manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Wrocław, Poland.

Routes and maintenance

The locomotives were delivered under several contracts. Thirteen vehicles are approved for operation in Poland, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and France, while five are intended for operation in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The contracts also include two years of preventive maintenance services during the warranty period.

Alstom described the delivery as another milestone in its partnership with CLIP Intermodal. The company said the Traxx locomotives will allow the operator to expand international intermodal operations on routes linking Poland with Western Europe and along key corridors across Central Europe.

“CLIP Intermodal is today one of the leaders of the logistics transformation in Poland and the wider region. We are impressed by the company’s continued investment in infrastructure and services that strengthen Poland’s position as a strategic transport hub in Europe. We are proud that Alstom locomotives can support such a dynamic and fast-growing business. We believe that combining innovative rail technologies with CLIP’s vision for growth is accelerating the development of a modern, sustainable and competitive transport system across Europe,” said Beata Rusinowicz, the Managing Director of Alstom in Poland.

Onvia Cab ETCS equipment

The locomotives are equipped with Alstom’s Onvia Cab onboard European Train Control System (ETCS) solution, which Alstom said enables cross-border operations in compliance with European railway signalling standards. The company has delivered more than 300 ETCS onboard projects worldwide, with more than 25,000 onboard units installed on over 200 vehicle types.

Alstom said Traxx Universal locomotives have been approved for operation in 20 countries, collectively covering more than 300 million kilometres each year. Since 2000, more than 6,000 Alstom locomotives have been ordered for operation across Europe, Asia, North America and Africa.
