TransPennine Express has launched a refurbishment programme to install redesigned seating across its Nova 1 fleet, supporting passenger comfort while showcasing expertise from suppliers across northern England.
TransPennine Express (TPE) has started a fleet-wide refurbishment programme that will see all 19 Nova 1 trains fitted with new seat covers, with the work scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
The redesigned seating has been developed in partnership with suppliers from across northern England and is intended to refresh the interior appearance of the fleet while improving passenger comfort. The new design draws inspiration from the distinctive shard shapes featured in TPE’s branding and the exterior livery of the Nova 1 trains, creating a consistent visual identity throughout the vehicles.
Regional suppliers support fleet refresh
Several businesses from across the North have contributed to the project. Sheffield-based Diamond Group is supplying the replacement seat covers and cushions, while Mirfield textile manufacturer Camira supported the colour selection and material sampling process. The overall seating design was created in partnership with Hitachi Rail by Derby-based industrial designers David Gordon and Andy Sykes.
Accessibility formed a key part of the design process, with high-contrast colours incorporated to improve visibility for passengers with visual impairments. The refurbishment also focuses on durability to support the long-term performance of the fleet.
Paul Staples, Engineering, Safety and Sustainability Director at TPE, said: “We have worked with Hitachi and a number of businesses local to our network so this project not only makes the trains look better for our customers but supports the communities that we serve.”
Jenny Dempsey, Managing Director of Diamond Rail Services, said the refurbishment programme had created new employment opportunities while demonstrating the value of investing in regional supply chains.
She added: “Working alongside TPE, Hitachi Rail and fellow Yorkshire business Camira has been a fantastic example of what can be achieved when regional expertise comes together.”
TPE said it will continue exploring similar refurbishment opportunities across its other fleets while working with suppliers to enhance cleaning and maintenance programmes for existing interiors.
