The order follows the entry into service of the first Avelia Stream Nordic units on the Västra Götaland regional network and forms part of Västtrafik’s fleet modernisation programme, with the new trains set to replace older rolling stock.

Alstom has received an order from Västtrafik to deliver 35 additional Avelia Stream Nordic X80 trains, exercising an option under the existing frame contract.
The option is worth approximately €350 million, according to Alstom, and takes the total number of trains the manufacturer will deliver to Västtrafik to 80.
Fleet modernisation in western Sweden
The order follows the entry into service of the first Avelia Stream Nordic trains. Alstom said it reflects Västtrafik’s continued confidence in Alstom’s ability to deliver a modern, reliable and sustainable regional fleet. The order will be booked in the second quarter of Alstom’s fiscal year 2026/27.
Alstom said the option supports Västtrafik’s long-term ambition to increase capacity, improve punctuality and promote sustainable mobility across western Sweden.
“With these 35 new trains, we are taking another step towards more modern, spacious and comfortable public transport for our passengers. The trains will also reduce our energy consumption and replace our older rolling stock,” said Bijan Zainali, Chair of the Västtrafik Board.
“This order marks an important new step in Västtrafik’s fleet modernisation programme and illustrates how Alstom supports customers throughout the entire lifecycle of their assets, from train delivery to long-term maintenance and operational performance. Together, we are helping deliver greater capacity, reliability and sustainability for passengers across western Sweden for decades to come,” said Maria Signal Martebo, Managing Director of Alstom Sweden.

Winterised regional design
Each train has a top speed of 200 km/h and 270 seats across three cars. Alstom said passenger features include step-free boarding, dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and strollers, and real-time information systems.
The Avelia Stream Nordic X80 received a Red Dot Award in 2025, which recognised its design. The trains include energy-efficient systems such as regenerative braking, which recovers energy during braking and contributes to lower energy consumption in operation.
Alstom said the train is designed for tough environmental conditions with the highest level of winterisation, and can operate through 80 cm of snow and in temperatures down to -40°C.
Deliveries and maintenance
The first Avelia Stream Nordic trains were delivered in spring 2026 after several months of testing on the network and now operate on the regional rail network in Västra Götaland. Further deliveries will continue over the coming years.
Alstom also maintains Västtrafik’s train fleet, which currently comprises both the new trains and older generation rolling stock, to support high availability and long-term operational reliability across the region. Once all 80 new trains have been delivered, they will form the backbone of Västtrafik’s regional rail services.
Avelia Stream Nordic forms part of Alstom’s Avelia high-speed train platform, which covers maximum operating speeds between 200 km/h and 320 km/h. More than 2,200 high-speed trains with Avelia technology are operating in 25 countries, according to Alstom.
