Alstom has announced a series of expanded partnerships with leading academic institutions in the United States aimed at developing the next generation of rail and transit professionals.

The initiatives include a new engineering scholarship fund at Alfred State College in New York alongside collaborations with transport research centres at the University of Pennsylvania and New York University.

The partnerships come as Alstom continues expanding operations across North America following several major rail orders secured in the United States over the past two years. The company said the growth is driving increased recruitment across manufacturing, engineering, operations and management roles.

At Alfred State College, part of the State University of New York system, Alstom will provide $50,000 to establish a scholarship fund supporting students studying engineering technology. The college already works closely with Alstom’s manufacturing facility in Hornell, New York, located nearby.

Alstom has also become a founding sponsor of the Transportation Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania. The programme is focused on linking academic transport research with practical policy and operational solutions for the rail sector.

In New York City, Alstom executives have joined the advisory board of the NYU Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management, which supports transport policy research, innovation and leadership development.

Dani Simons said modernising and expanding public transport infrastructure would create significant employment opportunities across the country.

She said the company wanted students to understand the rail industry offered long term career opportunities ranging from technical manufacturing roles to advanced engineering positions.

Leslie Richards said Alstom’s operational and manufacturing experience provided valuable insight for transport research and teaching programmes.

Alstom currently operates manufacturing facilities across several US states and has delivered more than 12,000 rail vehicles for transit agencies including New York City, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and Washington DC. The company also remains one of the largest private rail operators in the United States.
