Alstom secures SNCF order for 15 additional Avelia Horizon high-speed trains

Alstom has received an additional order from SNCF Voyageurs for 15 new-generation Avelia Horizon very high-speed trains, strengthening the long-term partnership between the two organisations. Approved by the SNCF Voyageurs Board of Directors, the optional tranche is valued at approximately 600 million euros, with deliveries scheduled from 2029.

The new trains will be the quad-voltage version of the Avelia Horizon platform, enabling operation across European rail networks and meeting international interoperability requirements. This latest order forms part of the Avelia Horizon Innovation Partnership framework contract and represents the fourth tranche of this programme. It complements the 115 trains already ordered by SNCF Voyageurs, alongside 30 trains ordered by Eurostar, bringing the total number of Avelia Horizon trains under contract to 160.

Designed to combine performance, capacity and sustainability, the Avelia Horizon is the only double-decker high-speed train capable of operating at speeds above 300 km/h. Its innovative architecture features two compact power cars and articulated double-deck passenger coaches, delivering high operational flexibility while maintaining strong safety and passenger comfort standards.

Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France, Belgium and Luxembourg, said: “This contract once again confirms the success of high-speed rail and the Avelia Horizon platform, while illustrating our strong commitment to sustainable, low-carbon mobility.” He added that the solution was designed to address both technological and economic challenges, supporting the shift towards environmentally responsible transport.

Energy efficiency is a core feature of the Avelia Horizon. Thanks to aerodynamic optimisation and more efficient traction systems, the trains are expected to consume 20% less energy than existing TGV fleets. Maintenance costs are also forecast to be more than 30% lower, supported by predictive maintenance tools and remote diagnostics that enhance reliability and availability.

Ten Alstom sites across France will contribute to the programme, covering power cars, passenger vehicles, traction systems, signalling, interiors and onboard systems. This nationwide industrial footprint underlines the strategic importance of the project for the French rail supply chain.

With this latest order, Alstom and SNCF Voyageurs continue to reinforce high-speed rail as a competitive, sustainable and passenger-focused mode of transport, supporting growing demand for low-carbon travel across France and Europe.
