Siemens Mobility has celebrated the production of its 2,000th electric Vectron locomotive, with the milestone unit delivered to Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).

Siemens Mobility has delivered the 2,000th electric Vectron locomotive to Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), marking a significant milestone for one of Europe’s most widely used locomotive platforms.

The ceremonial handover took place at Siemens Mobility’s Munich-Allach locomotive plant on 23 July. Since its launch in 2012, the Vectron platform has become the company’s best-selling locomotive family, with almost 3,000 units sold to more than 115 customers.

Designed for cross-border operations, the Vectron is approved to operate in 20 European countries and can reach speeds of up to 230km/h in passenger service. Its multi-system capability allows operators to run services across different national rail networks, making it a popular choice for international passenger and freight corridors.

Steffen Bobsien, Vice President Locomotives and Coaches at Siemens Mobility, said: “The 2,000th electric Vectron locomotive represents far more than just a production number – it stands for the trust that railway operators across Europe place in our platform every day.”

Alongside the production milestone, Siemens Mobility highlighted the continued development of the platform through the introduction of the digital Vectron X.

The latest version incorporates an integrated app store within the driver’s cab, allowing operators to access applications developed by Siemens Mobility and third-party providers through the onboard Smart Screen. Additional digital features include Remote Start, Vectron Eco Cruise and Trainplay, alongside condition monitoring, structured vehicle data and predictive maintenance tools designed to improve operational efficiency and fleet availability.
