OBB Rail Cargo Group has officially opened its modernised combined transport terminal at Přerov-Horní Moštěnice following a 16-month construction programme aimed at increasing capacity and improving freight handling operations.

The redevelopment has transformed the terminal into a larger and more efficient logistics hub, supporting growing demand for intermodal transport across Central Europe. The project addresses long-standing operational constraints while creating additional capacity for future growth.

One of the most significant improvements is the expansion of the terminal site by approximately 17,100 square metres. The facility now covers around 36,000 square metres in total, almost doubling its previous footprint.

Prerov terminal expansion boosts freight capacity

The investment has delivered larger handling and storage areas, improved access to railway tracks and new freight handling equipment. These enhancements are expected to increase operational flexibility while improving service quality for customers.

The terminal now offers capacity for approximately 3,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), allowing more efficient container handling and supporting a higher frequency of freight train movements.

The modernised facility is expected to strengthen Přerov’s role as a major distribution centre within Central Moravia, benefiting from strong rail and road connections that support regional and international logistics flows.

Future development plans include new rail freight services linking the terminal with the Adriatic ports of Koper and Rijeka. The site is also expected to strengthen intermodal transport corridors across Central Europe and support Euro-Asian rail freight routes via Budapest.

The expanded terminal area also creates opportunities for handling semi-trailers, increasing the range of intermodal services available to freight customers.

Christoph Grasl, Member of the Board of the OBB Rail Cargo Group, said: “We see Přerov as a key hub for the further development of combined transport in Central Europe. Our long-term goal is to build a robust and flexible logistics infrastructure that offers our customers stability, even in times of fluctuating global supply chains.”

Investment supports modal shift to rail

The terminal has a long history as a freight transport hub, with its origins dating back to the former ČSKD-INTRANS terminal established during the 1970s. While many similar facilities closed after 1990, the strategic location of Přerov enabled it to remain operational and develop into one of Moravia’s most important intermodal centres.

The expansion also supports wider European sustainability goals by encouraging the transfer of freight from road to rail. By increasing combined transport capacity, the project is expected to help reduce carbon emissions and ease pressure on heavily used road networks.

Co-financed by the European Union, the modernisation reinforces the role of rail freight as a more sustainable transport option while strengthening the resilience of European supply chains and logistics networks.
