Alstom has signed four major contracts with Egyptian National Railways (ENR) as part of a consortium with Rowad Modern Engineering and Concrete Plus to modernise key freight and passenger rail corridors across Egypt.

The projects have a combined value of approximately €690 million, with Alstom’s share accounting for around €300 million. The investment will support Egypt’s Vision 2030 programme by improving logistics networks, strengthening freight operations and enhancing connectivity between ports, industrial zones and inland logistics centres.

The contracts cover the 6th of October–Alexandria corridor and the Belbes–10th of Ramadan (B10) railway line, both of which play important roles within Egypt’s transport network.

Alstom to deliver digital railway upgrades across Egypt

The largest project is the modernisation of the 6th of October–Alexandria corridor, valued at €550 million. Alstom’s share of this contract is approximately €240 million.

The programme will be delivered across three implementation phases and includes the installation of advanced digital railway systems, upgraded telecommunications infrastructure, strengthened power supply systems and extensive civil and track improvements.

According to Alstom, the upgrades will improve safety, increase network capacity, enhance operational reliability and reduce journey times across the route by nearly 80 minutes.

The Belbes–10th of Ramadan project, valued at approximately €140 million, will introduce similar modernisation measures. The line serves one of Egypt’s largest industrial regions and is expected to improve freight efficiency while supporting future economic growth.

Martin Vaujour, President of Africa, Middle East and Central Asia at Alstom, said: “The Africa, Middle East and Central Asia region has never been more committed to building smarter, more resilient rail networks, and Alstom is at the center of that transformation.”

He added: “These contracts demonstrate our capacity to deliver large-scale, complex signalling programmes, and our determination to be a long-term partner for its most critical mobility infrastructure.”

Projects strengthen freight and logistics connections

The upgrades will improve rail links between the 6th of October Dry Port, Alexandria Seaport and the 10th of Ramadan industrial zone, helping to strengthen supply chains and support sustainable freight transport.

As consortium leader, Alstom will oversee engineering, design, testing and commissioning activities while delivering ETCS Level 1 signalling, telecommunications systems, power infrastructure and modern operations control technology.

Ramy Salah, Managing Director of Alstom Egypt, said: “These projects are redefining the future of rail in Egypt.”

He added: “Our partnership with Egyptian National Railways, driven by world class expertise and Egyptian talents, is creating vital transport corridors that drive economic growth, connect key industrial and logistics centres, and unlock new opportunities for future generations.”

The projects are also expected to achieve approximately 50 per cent local content through Egyptian engineering expertise and local supply chain participation.
