Alstom wins Queensland ETCS contract

Alstom has secured the first €69 million tranche of a wider €214 million Queensland Government contract to deliver digital signalling systems for Stage 1 of The Wave rail programme in Australia.

The contract will see Alstom design, supply, test and commission its ONVIA Control ETCS Level 2 trackside signalling system for Sector 1 North along the new Sunshine Coast line.

The programme forms part of Queensland’s wider ETCS rollout strategy focused on increasing rail network capacity, improving operational reliability and supporting long term transport growth ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Alstom to deploy ETCS Level 2 technology in Queensland

The Sector 1 North project includes both brownfield and greenfield railway sections across The Wave programme and the North Coast Line, requiring complex integration while maintaining passenger operations.

Guillaume Tritter said the project combines Alstom’s global signalling expertise with its established presence in Queensland to support a safer and more efficient transport network.

Ling Fang said the ETCS Level 2 platform has already been deployed across thousands of kilometres of railway in more than 35 countries.

She added that the technology enables operators to maximise network capacity, operational efficiency and railway safety through continuous digital train control.

The project will be delivered in partnership with Queensland Rail alongside several civil infrastructure contractors working across the wider programme.

Alstom said the project would also support local economic growth through the creation of a Queensland Mobility Supply Chain Centre of Excellence alongside apprenticeships, traineeships and university partnerships aimed at developing future rail industry skills.
