Sydney Metro West has reached a major milestone with the awarding of four key contracts, accelerating delivery of faster and more reliable journeys between the Sydney CBD and Greater Parramatta.
John Holland has been appointed to deliver 60 kilometres of track across the network, including the installation of rail systems and construction of the 38-hectare stabling and maintenance facility in Clyde. Once tunnelling is complete next year, around 1,000 workers will begin fitting out tunnels up to 37 metres beneath the city. Works will include tracks, power, ventilation and communications systems, as well as essential safety infrastructure such as walkways, fire systems and cross passages.
Gamuda has been awarded the first station contract covering the design and construction of five new underground metro stations at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays. Each station will provide world-class metro services while reflecting the unique character and future aspirations of its local area.
The Metro Trains West Consortium, a joint venture led by MTR Corporation with CRRC Corporation Limited, will deliver 16 next-generation metro trains powered by artificial intelligence and the associated rail systems. The consortium will also operate and maintain the Sydney Metro West network for 15 years after the line opens to passengers in 2032.
The Metropolis Consortium, including Lendlease, Mirvac and Coombes Property Group, has been appointed Precinct Development Partner for Hunter Street Station. This package covers the construction of the underground station and two over-station commercial developments. Hunter Street Station will be the busiest on the line, offering 20-minute journeys to Parramatta, pedestrian connections to Wynyard, and direct access to M1 Metro platforms at Martin Place. Lendlease is expected to commence construction of the main station works in late 2026.
Remaining contracts for stations at Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Pyrmont will be announced later in 2026. A shortlist of three consortia has been invited to tender for the Pyrmont Integrated Station Development, which will include an underground station, five levels of commercial and retail space and up to 160 apartments.
