Siemens Mobility has signed an agreement to acquire several key businesses from Italian rail technology specialist MERMEC Group as part of efforts to strengthen its global signalling and diagnostics portfolio.

The acquisition will expand Siemens Mobility’s capabilities across railway signalling, diagnostics, electrification and infrastructure measurement technologies while significantly increasing its industrial footprint in Italy.

The transaction includes MERMEC businesses focused on Italian wayside signalling, electrification, telecommunications, diagnostics, analytics and railway data infrastructure.

The deal excludes MERMEC’s investments in Angelstar, Mont Saint Michel and MERMEC Deutschland.

The companies stated that the acquisition remains subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to close by the end of 2026.

According to Siemens Mobility, the agreement supports long-term investment plans focused on digital rail technologies and expanding the company’s asset intelligence capabilities.

Michael Peter said: “By combining MERMEC’s technological expertise and market access with Siemens Mobility’s global presence and technology leadership, we are strengthening our capabilities in diagnostics, asset-intelligence and signalling capabilities.”

The acquisition will also strengthen Siemens Mobility’s diagnostics offering through the integration of MERMEC’s fleet of high precision inspection trains, railway infrastructure measurement systems and analytics software platforms.

Customers are expected to benefit from expanded asset monitoring and infrastructure diagnostics services delivered through Siemens Mobility’s global operational network.

The Ferrosud facility in Matera is expected to become an industrial hub supporting next-generation diagnostics technologies within Siemens Mobility’s international innovation ecosystem.

Vito Pertosa said the transaction would provide MERMEC employees with access to “a global environment, strongly focused on innovation and sustainable growth”.

Founded in 1970 and headquartered in Monopoli, MERMEC currently operates across more than 70 countries and employs around 1,700 people across its core businesses included within the transaction.

The businesses involved generated approximately €430 million in revenue during the 2025 financial year.

Siemens Mobility said the acquisition is expected to support future cross-selling opportunities and strengthen long-term competitiveness within the growing global rail infrastructure market.

The agreement also highlights increasing investment activity across the international rail sector as manufacturers and technology companies expand digital signalling, diagnostics and infrastructure intelligence capabilities to support network modernisation programmes worldwide.
