Transport for Wales (TfW) is rolling out new technology at seven stations across the Wales and borders network this summer to improve accessibility, customer support and station operations.

The works will introduce modernised gatelines, colleague tablet devices and interactive video help points at Cardiff Queen Street, Neath, Swansea, Rhyl, Chester, Shrewsbury and Newport, combining updated barriers with improved on-the-ground support to keep passengers moving smoothly as part of TfW’s investment in station infrastructure.

Supporting frontline staff

Darren Haynes, head of customer operations at Transport for Wales, said: “This investment across seven of our major stations will significantly improve daily station operations and enhance the passenger experience. These updates are designed to make every journey smoother while equipping our frontline colleagues with modern tools to ensure our stations remain welcoming and accessible for everyone.”

Installation work will take place over five days at each location between Monday 3 August and Thursday 1 October. The new gates will remain out of service during testing, with manual ticket inspections carried out by station colleagues so passengers can continue travelling as normal.

Passengers using pay as you go contactless payment are advised to tap in and out at every journey. Failing to tap out may result in an incomplete journey charge, though missing details can be corrected via the TfW app or online account.
