Acquisition strengthens Hitachi Rail’s global digital strategy, enhancing passenger experience, fleet management and multimodal transport solutions across North America and beyond.

Hitachi Rail has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Clever Devices, marking a significant step in its strategy to become a leading global digital mobility provider.
Headquartered in Woodbury, New York, Clever Devices specialises in Intelligent Transportation Systems used by transit agencies worldwide. Its solutions focus on enhancing fleet management, improving passenger information and increasing operational efficiency across bus and rail networks.
Expanding digital and multimodal capabilities
The acquisition will strengthen Hitachi Rail’s position in North America and extend its capabilities beyond rail into multimodal transport systems. Clever Devices brings a strong customer base, including eight of the ten largest transit agencies in the region, alongside international operations in Europe and South America.
The company’s portfolio of onboard and centralised data solutions will complement Hitachi Rail’s HMAX Mobility platform, which connects data from trains, signalling systems and infrastructure to create a digital operational model of railway networks.
By combining these technologies, Hitachi Rail aims to deliver more integrated, real time solutions for public transport, supporting improved service punctuality, better passenger information and enhanced system performance.
Giuseppe Marino, Group CEO of Hitachi Rail, said the acquisition represents an important milestone in accelerating digital transformation across public mobility, enabling more data driven and efficient transport networks.
The integration of Clever Devices’ fleet management systems with Hitachi Rail’s operations control centres is expected to enable real time multimodal coordination, supporting more connected and sustainable urban transport systems.
The move also aligns with broader industry goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, optimise energy use and improve the attractiveness of public transport through better reliability and service quality.
Hitachi Rail has continued to expand its presence in North America, supported by recent investments including a digital factory in Maryland and a new headquarters in Canada.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close later this year.
