DB Cargo has expanded its predictive maintenance capabilities through its SherLok platform, using real-time data and automated diagnostics to improve fleet reliability and optimise maintenance operations.

DB Cargo is strengthening locomotive availability through the use of predictive maintenance, with its SherLok platform enabling maintenance teams to identify potential faults before they affect operations.
The digital platform continuously analyses real-time data from across the operator’s locomotive fleet, monitoring the condition of critical components and providing a comprehensive overview of fleet performance. By identifying maintenance requirements at an early stage, SherLok allows work to be incorporated into workshop planning before failures occur, helping to reduce downtime, improve efficiency and lower operating costs.
Real-time monitoring improves maintenance planning
SherLok combines multiple sources of operational data into a single platform, including vehicle performance information, diagnostic messages, temperatures, energy consumption, locomotive location and workshop records. This creates what DB Cargo describes as a 360-degree view of its rolling stock.
In addition to automated condition monitoring, the platform allows authorised staff to carry out real-time remote diagnostics through an intuitive web interface. Engineers and operational teams can access data directly using tablets or smartphones without requiring specialist IT support, enabling faster operational decisions and improving collaboration across different locations.
The system also automates maintenance workflows. When algorithms identify a potential issue, work orders are generated automatically without manual intervention, allowing maintenance teams to prepare replacement parts, plan repairs and schedule resources before a locomotive reaches the workshop.
Remote diagnostics also enable components to be monitored while trains are operating under normal service conditions, providing information that is often difficult to reproduce during depot inspections. This allows maintenance activities to be targeted more precisely while reducing unnecessary interventions.
DB Cargo said the use of SherLok is transforming maintenance from a reactive process into a proactive, data-driven operation, improving fleet availability while supporting more efficient, sustainable and cost-effective rail operations.
