LNER has completed its first live ETCS Level 2 operation with an Azuma train, advancing the East Coast Digital Programme and the rollout of digital signalling.

LNER has completed the first live operation of an Azuma train under European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 supervision on the East Coast Main Line, marking a significant milestone in the introduction of digital signalling across the route.
The overnight testing took place between Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin on 15 and 16 July, bringing together engineers, technicians and drivers from LNER, Network Rail, Hitachi Rail, Agility Trains and RailAdventure UK. The trial formed part of the East Coast Digital Programme, which is preparing one of Britain’s busiest rail corridors for the next generation of signalling technology.
During the tests, the train and trackside systems were assessed at line speed under live operating conditions to evaluate the performance of ETCS Level 2 and gather operational data ahead of wider deployment.
Digital signalling moves closer
ETCS replaces conventional lineside signals with digital information displayed directly inside the driver’s cab. The system enables continuous communication between trains and signalling equipment, providing real-time movement authority and operational information while improving safety and reliability.
The trial also gave train crews and engineers valuable experience of operating the technology on a live railway, helping inform the next stages of implementation.

He added: “The trial has provided valuable first-hand experience of operating with digital signalling in a live railway environment, providing important insights into how the technology performs.”
Chris Hobden, Programme Director for the East Coast Digital Programme at Network Rail, said the successful trial represented another step towards preparing LNER’s Azuma fleet and other Hitachi-operated long-distance trains for digital signalling.
He noted that ETCS migration on the East Coast Main Line would be introduced gradually, beginning later this year before accelerating during 2027 as more operators, fleets and onboard systems become ready.

Miguel Frade, Engineering Director at Agility Trains, added that the milestone would support the rollout of ETCS across the company’s fleet of 65 Class 800 and Class 801 Azuma trains, helping improve efficiency, capacity and operational safety.
The successful trial represents another important step towards delivering a digitally controlled railway capable of improving performance, increasing reliability and supporting future capacity growth on the East Coast Main Line.
