Great Western Railway has reported strong early passenger growth following the launch of expanded Mid Cornwall Metro services between Newquay and Par.

During the first week of operation between 17 and 23 May, passenger journeys increased by almost 25 per cent compared with the same period in 2025. Saturday services alone recorded a 50 per cent increase in passenger numbers, with 429 additional journeys made across the route.

A special event was held in Newquay station on 1 June to celebrate the introduction of the upgraded timetable, which represents the highest level of rail service on the Atlantic Coast line since the 1960s.

Mid Cornwall Metro expands Cornwall rail connectivity

The new timetable introduced by GWR includes 15 weekday services between Par and Newquay, 14 Saturday services and eight Sunday services. Direct summer services between London Paddington station and Newquay have also returned, increasing weekday train services to 17.

Funded by Cornwall Council and the UK Government, Mid Cornwall Metro represents a £57 million investment designed to improve rail connections between Newquay, St Austell, Truro and Falmouth/Penryn.

The programme aims to strengthen sustainable transport links across Cornwall while improving access to employment, education and public services. Funding has also supported the introduction of pay as you go ticketing across Cornwall’s rail network.

Peter Hendy said the project was already helping improve connections between Cornwall’s north and south coasts while supporting economic growth and tourism.

Noah Law described the project as an important improvement for regional connectivity, particularly for Newquay.

Dan Rogerson said investment in reliable public transport was encouraging more residents to use rail services across the county.

Infrastructure improvements delivered by Network Rail include the reopening of platform 2 at Newquay station and construction of a new passing loop allowing two trains to operate simultaneously on the branch line.

New Class 175 trains have also entered service, providing additional capacity, improved passenger comfort and enhanced operational reliability.

Phase two of the Mid Cornwall Metro programme is expected to begin next year, extending services further through Truro, Penryn and Falmouth.
