Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, announced the commencement of Bhopal’s first metro service with its inaugural run aboard Alstom-built Movia trains. The new trains feature the latest generation of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, ensuring safe, reliable, and sustainable mobility for commuters. The first train was flagged off at Subhash Nagar station in the presence of Dr Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Bhopal. It is also a proud moment for us at Alstom as it represents our unwavering commitment to ‘Make in India’ and to delivering world-class and sustainable mobility solutions,” said Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India.

Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the Bhopal and Indore metro trainsets have been manufactured entirely in India at Alstom’s Savli facility, Gujarat. The 387-million-euro contract, awarded in June 2022, includes 52 Movia trainsets, CBTC signalling, advanced train control and telecommunication systems, and 15 years of comprehensive maintenance.

The first Bhopal trainset was delivered in August 2023, followed by the second in September 2023. The trains operate at a top speed of 80 km/h on the 31.5 km Bhopal line with 30 stations, beginning with a priority section of eight stations covering nearly 7 km. Each train accommodates 144 seated and 981 standing passengers.

Alstom’s Movia trains are inclusive, energy-efficient, and eco-designed, with regenerative braking, energy-efficient air-conditioning, ambient lighting, and a Train Control and Management System with automatic track inspection. Passenger safety is ensured through continuous CCTV, direct operator communication, and intelligent features including unattended object detection. Dedicated wheelchair spaces support passengers with reduced mobility.

The Movia trains are part of Alstom’s Metropolis metro solutions, operating in over 80 cities globally, including London, Delhi, Stockholm, and Singapore, demonstrating Alstom India’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility.
