Adif has energised the overhead contact line for the new Eastern Railway Diversion in Montcada i Reixac, a 1.35km double-track section due to enter service at the end of 2026 as part of the wider rail integration project in the town.
Adif has energised the new catenary for the Eastern Railway Diversion (DFE) in Montcada i Reixac, a 1.35 kilometre double-track section running to the east of the current tracks and expected to enter service at the end of 2026.
From 00:01 on 17 September 2026, the conductors of the overhead contact line for electric traction on the new diversion must be considered live. The line will operate at 3,000V DC and will power the new railway, with Adif warning that contact with the conductors, either directly or through metal objects, must be avoided due to the risk of electrocution.
Diversion frees up space for undergrounding works
The DFE has been built to relocate railway traffic and free up the space needed to carry out undergrounding works in the area of the current Montcada i Reixac passenger station. The new line has double track and a temporary passenger station with two 210-metre-long side platforms and 43-metre-long canopies, including systems and equipment for the care and safety of travellers, as well as a new temporary ticket booth next to the underpass on Rocamora Street.
The works also include adapting the pedestrian underpasses at the current station and on Rocamora Street, and relocating the barriers and road signage at the level crossings on Pascual and Bogatell streets to the new route. To guarantee the operation of the DFE, its connection to the existing substation has been planned, along with the installation, next to the current one, of a new electronic interlocking system to control and ensure train routes and movements.
The diversion also required replacing services and supplies affected by the works and temporarily diverting the Rec Comtal watercourse.
The wider rail integration project for Montcada i Reixac includes burying the Barcelona-Portbou line as it passes through the town centre via a four-kilometre tunnel accommodating three tracks, along with construction of a new underground station. Adif said the project will improve accessibility of the rail infrastructure and eliminate the two existing level crossings in the area, and contribute to Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 11, covering reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructure and access to safe, affordable and sustainable transport systems.
