New Metropolis trains arrive to boost capacity, improve passenger experience and support urban mobility growth in the Dominican Republic’s capital.

Alstom has delivered the first two of eight new Metropolis trains for the expansion of Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro, working in partnership with Oficina para el Reordenamiento del Transporte.
The trains are part of a project to extend the metro line to Los Alcarrizos, supporting increased capacity and improved connectivity across the Dominican capital. Manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Barcelona, the trains are shipped as individual cars before being assembled and tested locally.
Increasing capacity and passenger comfort
The new three car trains feature wider doors to improve passenger flow, open gangways for full inter car circulation and advanced passenger information systems. Additional upgrades include high-efficiency LED lighting and modern driver cab technology.
The trains are designed to operate in multiple-unit configuration, enabling the network to increase capacity in line with growing demand. This flexibility is expected to support more efficient operations and reduce congestion on the system.
Maite Ramos of Alstom said the delivery marks a key milestone for urban mobility in the Dominican Republic, highlighting the company’s long-term commitment to developing safe and sustainable transport solutions.
Jhael Isa of OPRET added that the project will improve daily travel for passengers by enhancing reliability and efficiency across the metro network.
The trains will now undergo pre-operational testing within the metro system to validate performance under real-world conditions, including new braking technologies.
