Alstom has secured a five-year contract extension to operate and maintain the automated people mover system at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, continuing a partnership that began in 1980.

The Plane Train is a core component of airport operations, connecting terminals through a 2.8-mile underground tunnel. Operating continuously, the system ensures passengers can move between concourses in minutes. In 2025, it recorded an all-time high of 95 million passengers, reflecting its critical role in handling growing demand.

Long-term contract supports high-capacity airport transport operations

The agreement, valued at approximately €140 million, covers full operations and maintenance services. This includes 24/7 system operation, power and electrification, maintenance of vehicles and guideway, and cleaning of tunnels, platforms and associated infrastructure.

Michael Keroullé of Alstom said the extension reflects a long-standing commitment to delivering safe and efficient passenger mobility, supported by a dedicated local workforce. Kenny Williams of the airport highlighted that the continued partnership supports both operational reliability and skilled employment in Atlanta.

Alongside the contract, Alstom is also delivering infrastructure upgrades and supplying 63 new Innovia APM R vehicles. These enhancements will increase system capacity and enable more frequent services across the airport.

The contract includes two additional one-year options and ensures continued employment for nearly 140 on-site staff. Alstom’s local team also contributes to the wider community through social initiatives and partnerships.

The extension forms part of Alstom’s FlexCare Operate portfolio, supporting long-term service performance, cost efficiency and improved passenger experience across global transport systems.
