Alstom has been awarded a two-year contract to maintain Sweden’s overnight passenger train fleet on behalf of rail operator SJ, strengthening its position in the Nordic rail services market.

The agreement, awarded following a procurement by the Swedish Transport Administration, covers almost 90 rail vehicles, including 12 locomotives and 75 passenger carriages operating on overnight services between Stockholm, Umeå and Narvik.

The contract is valued at tens of millions of euros and will see Alstom continue supporting one of Sweden’s most important long-distance rail services while expanding specialist maintenance capabilities in Northern Sweden.

Supporting Sweden’s night train network

The maintenance programme will primarily be carried out at Alstom’s facility in Lulea, supported by teams based in Umeå and Kiruna. Around 60 employees currently deliver maintenance services across the region, with further investment planned to expand depot capabilities and specialist expertise.

The contract covers complex sleeper rolling stock that requires specialist engineering knowledge due to the age of the vehicles and the onboard systems used to support overnight passenger services.

Alstom will provide maintenance through its FlexCare Perform service portfolio, focusing on fleet reliability, lifecycle management and asset availability. The company will also continue managing component obsolescence through refurbishment, replacement and life-extension programmes designed to maximise the operational life of the fleet.

Mikael Granberg, Services Director at Alstom Sweden and Finland, said: “Reliable night train services depend on more than maintenance—they require strong local presence, long-term asset expertise and continuous investment.”

He added: “This contract reinforces our role as a trusted partner for Sweden’s rail network while strengthening the capabilities needed for the future of night train travel.”

SJ also welcomed the continuation of the partnership.

Arvid Fredman, Director of Rolling Stock at SJ, said: “We are happy to continue our partnership with Alstom and look forward to further enhancing the travel experience for our customers together.”

Investing in long-distance sustainable travel

The overnight services play an important role in connecting northern and southern Sweden, offering a lower-carbon alternative to domestic flights and long-distance road travel.

Alstom said growing demand for sustainable long-distance rail travel across Europe is increasing the importance of maintaining reliable overnight services while preparing operators for future fleet renewal programmes.

The latest contract also supports the continued development of Northern Sweden as a regional centre for advanced rail maintenance and lifecycle services, strengthening long-term support for Sweden’s railway network.
