The project forms part of Mexico’s national strategy to modernise and expand passenger rail infrastructure across the country.

Hitachi Rail has secured a contract worth approximately €168 million to deliver railway systems for the Saltillo to Nuevo Laredo passenger rail corridor in Mexico.
The project forms part of the Mexican Government’s wider programme to reactivate and expand passenger rail services while supporting economic development across the northeast of the country.
The contract includes the design, development, supply, installation and commissioning of signalling, telecommunications and operational systems for the corridor.
Hitachi Rail to deliver ETCS signalling systems in Mexico
Under the agreement, Hitachi Rail will deploy signalling and track protection systems based on the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 standard to support operational reliability, interoperability and railway efficiency.
The company will also provide advanced telecommunications systems, CCTV solutions, transmission networks and SCADA systems for real time infrastructure supervision and control.
Additional works include equipment installation for 13 passenger stations, operational facilities, workshops and depots. The project will also include an Operational Control Center and a backup control centre to support centralised railway management.
Hitachi Rail said the programme represents another milestone in the company’s 55 year history in Mexico, where it has previously delivered projects including the Mexico City Metro, the Suburban Train and the Mexico Toluca Interurban railway.
The company added that the project would support the implementation of international interoperability standards while contributing to sustainable transport development in the country.
The Saltillo to Nuevo Laredo corridor forms part of Phase I of Mexico’s national passenger rail programme focused on delivering modern, connected and reliable railway infrastructure.
