Hitachi Rail will supply digital interlockings and Radio Block Centres for SBB, modernising Switzerland’s rail network, enhancing efficiency, sustainability and predictive maintenance capabilities.

Hitachi Rail has signed a framework agreement with SBB to deliver advanced digital signalling technology across the Swiss railway network as part of a wider programme valued at approximately €1.5 billion.
The landmark project will replace around 80 per cent of the existing interlocking systems over the next 20 years. Interlocking technology prevents conflicting movements on the railway track. Hitachi Rail will supply the latest generation of digital interlockings and Radio Block Centres, which are essential for implementing a nationwide driver’s cab signalling system. Digital interlocking improves railway operations by reducing track infrastructure, lowering maintenance needs and enhancing environmental performance.
The solution will also use smart Object Controllers based on the new EULYNX standard to control and monitor points, signals and track sections. These controllers not only manage assets but also collect and report data, including sensor information, about their status. This capability is a key enabler for predictive maintenance and contributes to more efficient operations.
The framework contract covers an initial ten-year period, with the option to extend three times for an additional five years each. It also includes 25 years of maintenance and support for the supplied systems. SBB estimates the total investment in the programme at approximately €1.5 billion.
Kurt Sauerwein, Managing Director of Hitachi Rail in Switzerland, said: “Hitachi Rail will work with our partners to shape a new era of rail transport in Switzerland. The introduction of digital interlockings is a technological milestone that not only enhances the efficiency and sustainability of the Swiss rail network but also reinforces Switzerland’s position as an international leader in mobility. We look forward to contributing our expertise and innovation to this program.”
The agreement marks a major step in modernising Switzerland’s rail infrastructure, improving safety, operational efficiency and long-term sustainability across the network.
