InnoTrans 2026 unveils global AI hackathon backed by major rail firms to accelerate innovation in data-driven transport solutions.

InnoTrans 2026 will introduce a new international AI hackathon, bringing together developers, startups and industry leaders to address real-world challenges in rail and mobility.
The “AI on Track” hackathon will take place from 23 to 25 September 2026 at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, forming a new highlight within the event’s innovation programme. Around 60 to 80 participants from across the world are expected to collaborate on data-driven solutions using artificial intelligence.
AI hackathon to drive data-driven innovation in rail sector
The initiative is supported by major industry sponsors, including Alstom, Siemens Mobility and Wabtec, each contributing practical challenges based on real operational needs.
Henri Badaro of Alstom said: “Rail generates data at scale – value emerges when this data drives better decisions and more reliable train operations.”
He added: “The InnoTrans hackathon ‘AI on Track’ builds directly on this approach, combining fresh perspectives with proven operational expertise to accelerate practical, data-driven solutions.”
Devina Pasta of Siemens Mobility highlighted the role of AI in future transport systems, stating: “Data and AI are the driving forces behind meeting these needs.”
She added that the hackathon provides a space for experimentation and collaboration between industry and emerging talent.
Paolo Pagliero of Wabtec emphasised the importance of responsible innovation, saying: “Wabtec is calling for the development of innovative AI solutions that meet ethical standards and operate efficiently.”
The hackathon will focus on challenges including disruption management, train planning, energy efficiency and passenger experience, reflecting key priorities across the rail sector.
Participants will benefit from extended access to the exhibition site, with special arrangements allowing teams to work late into the evening during the event. The programme will conclude with an awards ceremony, where winning teams can receive prizes of up to 5,000 euros.
Kerstin Schulz of InnoTrans said: “The hackathon underscores InnoTrans’ role as a key international platform for future mobility trends.”
She added that the initiative reflects the growing importance of artificial intelligence within the rail industry and enhances the event’s focus on innovation.
With strong industry backing and a focus on practical solutions, the AI on Track hackathon is expected to generate new ideas that support the digital transformation of rail and wider mobility systems.
