Polish State Railways (PKP) has awarded the construction contract for a new railway station in Mielec, marking another step in the city’s return as an important destination on Poland’s rail network.

Initial demolition work on the existing station, which has remained closed for many years, is expected to begin this summer. It will be replaced by a modern single-storey building featuring a contemporary glass façade, improved passenger facilities and enhanced accessibility.

The project follows the return of PKP Intercity long-distance services to Mielec at the end of 2024, alongside the restoration of regional passenger services following the modernisation of the railway line and station infrastructure.

Modern station to improve passenger experience

The new station has been designed to meet modern passenger requirements while providing improved accessibility for all users.

Inside, the building will include a heated and air-conditioned waiting room, passenger lobby, toilets and a retail space suitable for a café or convenience store. Office accommodation for railway companies and technical facilities will also be incorporated into the development.

The station will include accessible features for passengers with reduced mobility, as well as tactile paving, Braille signage and tactile station maps to assist blind and visually impaired travellers.

Electronic passenger information displays and public address systems will provide real-time train information, while photovoltaic panels, heat pumps and a Building Management System (BMS) will improve the building’s energy efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.

Dariusz Klimczak, Poland’s Minister of Infrastructure, said: “PKP Intercity has been operating long-distance connections to Mielec since the end of 2024, and the city will soon gain a new, greenfield railway station.”

Piotr Malepszak, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure, added: “A good passenger experience always consists of specific elements: infrastructure tailored to the needs of all travelers, comfortable trains, an attractive timetable, and modern tools that facilitate searching for connections and purchasing tickets.”

Investment supports rail growth

The investment forms part of PKP’s Passenger-Friendly Stations programme, which aims to modernise railway stations across Poland.

The station has been designed by An Archi Group, while STRABAG has been appointed as the construction contractor.

Completion is planned for 2027, subject to construction progress, technical inspections and regulatory approvals.

The construction contract is valued at more than PLN9.17 million, while the overall investment is expected to exceed PLN14.9 million.

The project will also improve links between the station, surrounding roads and railway platforms, creating a more integrated transport hub as passenger demand continues to grow across the Podkarpackie region.
