Alstom has announced plans to invest more than $55 million in a new maintenance and support facility in Newark, Delaware, that will service Amtrak’s NextGen Acela high-speed trains.

The company has acquired a 20-acre site located alongside the Northeast Corridor, providing direct rail access for train movements and positioning the facility as a key support hub for America’s newest high-speed fleet.

The investment forms part of Alstom’s Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement with Amtrak and will support the long-term maintenance, reliability and performance of the NextGen Acela trains.

New facility to support NextGen Acela fleet

Alstom plans to construct a dedicated maintenance building capable of servicing two trainsets simultaneously, alongside an additional outdoor track for train storage.

The facility is expected to become operational during summer 2028. Existing buildings on the site will also be refurbished and adapted to support spare parts distribution, warehouse operations and office accommodation.

Around 50 employees currently based at Alstom’s nearby New Castle facility will relocate to Newark when the site opens. A further 50 positions will be created as part of the expanded maintenance operation, bringing total employment at the location to approximately 100 people.

Michael Keroullé said the site would play a central role in ensuring the reliability and long-term performance of the NextGen Acela fleet while supporting economic growth and job creation in Delaware.

The project is being delivered in partnership with local authorities, including New Castle County officials and the Delaware Prosperity Partnership.

Laura Mason said the new facility would strengthen collaboration between Amtrak and Alstom while helping maintain one of the most advanced passenger train fleets operating in North America.

The facility will support services delivered through Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance portfolio, which focuses on keeping rolling stock available for service through efficient maintenance planning, technical support and rapid access to spare parts.

The NextGen Acela trains were manufactured by Alstom at its Hornell facility in New York and represent the next generation of high speed passenger rail technology in the United States.

Once operational, the Newark site will provide dedicated support for the fleet across the Northeast Corridor, one of the busiest passenger rail routes in North America.
