Alstom has secured a new five-year maintenance services contract worth €107 million through its joint venture with Indian Railways, Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL).

The agreement covers the maintenance of 250 WAG-12B electric locomotives and associated depot infrastructure at the MELPL Nagpur Depot. It follows the successful completion of the previous four-year contract and reflects Indian Railways’ continued confidence in Alstom’s maintenance capabilities.

The Nagpur depot has become a key maintenance hub for India’s high-powered freight locomotive fleet, supporting the operation of trains across the country’s Dedicated Freight Corridors.

Supporting India’s freight railway network

The 12,000hp Prima T8 WAG-12B locomotives are designed to haul freight trains weighing up to 6,000 tonnes at speeds of up to 120km/h. They play a central role in expanding freight capacity while helping reduce carbon emissions by shifting more freight traffic to rail.

Under the renewed agreement, Alstom will continue to provide comprehensive maintenance services through MELPL, including depot operations and infrastructure maintenance. Dedicated Prompt Response Teams equipped with specialist tools and spare parts will remain positioned at strategic locations to maximise fleet availability and minimise service disruptions.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, said: “This contract renewal is a strong validation of our commitment to Indian Railways and the success of our partnership.”

He added: “We are proud that the trust placed in us has translated into proven performance and reliability of the WAG-12B e-loco, which are vital to India’s freight revolution.”

The contract also includes ongoing technical training programmes to support workforce development and strengthen maintenance expertise at the Nagpur depot.

Alstom currently operates six industrial sites and five engineering centres across India, supporting domestic railway programmes as well as international projects through its rolling stock, signalling, components and maintenance businesses.
