Wabtec secures $386 million order to supply hybrid locomotives for New York MTA network

Wabtec Corporation (WAB) has secured a $386 million follow-on order to deliver additional R255 hybrid battery-diesel work locomotives to New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The order supports the Authority’s Capital Plan to modernise the city’s transit infrastructure and improve the safety and efficiency of its maintenance crews.

“The success of the R255 hybrid locomotive is a tribute to the strong working relationship between Wabtec and the MTA,” said Alan Hamilton, Vice President of Engineering for Wabtec. “Our collaboration positioned this locomotive as the ideal solution to maintain the subway system efficiently and reliably.”

The agreement covers both locomotives and spare parts. Wabtec will manufacture the R255s at its design and development centre in Erie, Pennsylvania, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027. The locomotives will replace ageing equipment, offering improved reliability, operational efficiency, and reduced emissions, contributing to cleaner air across the network. They form a key part of the MTA’s long-term strategy to provide safe and efficient transit solutions.

The R255 hybrid locomotives enhance working conditions for maintenance crews, particularly in tunnels. They can operate in “battery only” mode for several hours within confined work zones and move work trains when the third rail is de-energised.

Each locomotive is equipped with cameras and video recorders to capture images of track, lineside assets, and signalling equipment. Onboard diagnostics support smart maintenance practices, allowing crews to monitor performance and identify potential issues quickly.

These advanced capabilities are designed to empower maintenance teams and streamline day-to-day operations while supporting the MTA’s wider mission to modernise and decarbonise New York’s transit network.
