Siemens Mobility’s Vectron Dual Mode locomotive has received authorisation for cross-border operation between Germany and Austria, making Austria the second country to grant approval following Germany. The first two locomotives with dual-country authorisation were handed over to Austrian rail operator Stern & Hafferl Verkehr. Manufactured at Siemens Mobility’s Munich-Allach plant, the locomotives feature the modular Siemens On-board Unit Trainguard Basic with European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline 3.6, enabling safe, interoperable operation across national networks.
Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, highlighted that the dual-mode locomotives combine electric and diesel traction, allowing seamless operation on partially electrified routes without time-consuming locomotive changes. He noted this efficiency supports the modal shift from road to rail, aligning with sustainability goals.
Günter Neumann, CEO of Stern & Hafferl Verkehr, described the Austria-wide authorisation and handover of all six locomotives as a milestone, enabling efficient last-mile operations and contributing to environmentally conscious freight transport.
Dual-mode operation allows emission-free travel under overhead lines while maintaining flexibility on non-electrified sections, offering a key solution for densely populated areas. The Vectron Dual Mode uses proven Vectron components, a 1,435 mm track gauge, weighs 90 tons, and operates on 15 kV AC with a maximum output of 2,400 kW from catenary supply or 2,000 kW from diesel. The diesel tank holds 2,600 litres, with a top speed of 160 km/h.
A variant supporting both 15 kV and 25 kV AC systems is also available. These locomotives represent a strategic step in advancing cross-border European rail freight and passenger operations efficiently and sustainably.
