Gornergrat Railway has ordered four additional Stadler POLARIS cogwheel trains to support fleet renewal and maintain capacity on its high-altitude Zermatt–Gornergrat route in Switzerland, with delivery scheduled from autumn 2028.

Gornergrat Bahn has placed an order for four additional POLARIS cogwheel trains from Stadler, continuing its long-term programme to modernise rolling stock on one of Switzerland’s most visited mountain railway lines.

The contract, worth approximately CHF 30 million, follows earlier orders placed in 2019 and 2024 and reinforces the established partnership between the operator and Stadler. The new trains are scheduled for delivery from autumn 2028, with entry into passenger service expected from winter 2028.

The Gornergrat line runs between Zermatt and the Gornergrat summit and is internationally recognised for its panoramic views of the Matterhorn and surrounding Valais Alps. The route is also technically demanding, featuring gradients of up to 200‰ and requiring rack-and-pinion operation throughout significant sections of the line.

Fleet renewal and high-alpine performance

The latest POLARIS units will replace older vehicles as part of Gornergrat Bahn’s ongoing fleet renewal strategy. They are designed specifically for high-alpine operation, combining rack-and-pinion traction technology with systems optimised for steep gradients, variable weather conditions and seasonal passenger peaks.

According to the operator, the investment is intended to enhance operational reliability while maintaining capacity and service quality on a route that plays a key role in Swiss tourism. The line experiences strong seasonal demand, particularly during the winter ski season and summer tourist months.

Passenger experience has also been a key consideration in the design of the new trains. The POLARIS units will feature large panoramic windows to maximise visibility of the surrounding mountain landscape, including views of the Matterhorn. Interiors are designed to provide bright, open passenger compartments, with step-free access and full accessibility features incorporated throughout.

The trains also include a modernised interior and exterior design developed in collaboration with Italian design studio Pininfarina, reflecting the emphasis placed on premium tourism experience on the route.

Continued Stadler partnership and production

The order continues Stadler’s role as a key supplier of rack railway rolling stock in Switzerland and internationally. The POLARIS platform is already in service on the Gornergrat Railway, with previous units demonstrating suitability for the steep gradients and operational demands of the line.

Both Stadler and Gornergrat Bahn highlighted the repeat order as evidence of confidence in the platform and its performance in challenging environments. The operator also noted that the new trains will increase operational flexibility through the use of modern traction and control systems.

Manufacturing will take place at Stadler’s facility in Bussnang, Switzerland. Once delivered, the four new trains will form part of the operator’s wider programme of incremental fleet renewal aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and service quality on the high-altitude route.
