Ten railway stations across Bolton, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Trafford and Wigan are to benefit from improved passenger security and information facilities this year.

Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority’s (GMITA) Capital Projects Committee has welcomed the start of work to provide CCTV, help points, customer information screens and public address systems at the stations as part of its Rail Station Improvement Strategy.

The new facilities are being provided at Horwich Parkway, East Didsbury, Levenshulme, Mills Hill, Littleborough, Davenport, Gatley, Heald Green, Urmston and Bryn, and the work should be completed by autumn this year.

It is being funded by GMITA, Wigan’s Transport Infrastructure Fund, and the Department for Transport’s Access for All Small Schemes fund.

Councillor Richard Knowles, Chair of the Capital Projects Committee, said: “These new facilities should help people to feel more secure and better informed about how their trains are running, which should make using their local train services all the more attractive.

“These are exactly the kind of facilities that people tell us they want to see at stations, so I’m pleased that we’ve been able to provide them.”

The Rail Station Improvement Strategy was established to improve existing passenger security and information systems at smaller rail stations across Greater Manchester.

Heaton Chapel, Mossley, Romiley, Orrell, Cheadle Hulme, Swinton, Guide Bridge, Mauldeth Road, Burnage and Greenfield stations have all already benefited from the scheme.

Plans to introduce similar facilities at Ashton-under-Lyne, Marple, Bramhall, Walkden and Westhoughton stations are likely to be progressed this year.
