ÖBB and DB to expand overnight rail services

From 11 December 2016, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and German Railways (DB) will launch six new overnight rail services under ÖBB’s Nightjet brand.
From 11 December 2016, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and German Railways (DB) will launch six new overnight rail services under ÖBB’s Nightjet brand.
ÖBB and DB are to launch new overnight rail concepts for Germany. The move follows DB’s decision to halt its sleeper services in December 2015. As a result ÖBB will take over six of these routes under the Nightjet brand. Meanwhile DB will support ÖBB by providing overnight connections via its IC/ICE trains.
From Sunday 11 December, the ÖBB Nightjet lines will connect Innsbruck and Munich with Hamburg and Düsseldorf on a daily basis. In addition, the service will connect Hamburg and Berlin with Zurich, and Munich, Salzburg and Villach with Venice, Rome and Milan. Furthermore, on the route between Innsbruck and Hamburg it will be possible for cars and motorcycles to be transported daily and between Innsbruck and Düsseldorf three times a week.

- Hamburg – Berlin – Freiburg (B) – Basle – Zurich
- Innsbruck – Munich – Hamburg (car and motorcycle transport daily)
- Innsbruck – Munich – Düsseldorf (car and motorcycle transport 3 times a week)
- Munich – Salzburg – Villach – Venice
- Munich – Salzburg – Villach – Florence – Rome
- Munich – Salzburg – Villach – Verona – Milan
“In the future there will be an attractive night travel offer in Germany,” said Berthold Huber, DB Chairman of traffic and transportation. “The Night Journey concepts of both companies secure a wide range of different travel needs: With comfortable seating in our night-IC / ICE, but also with the classical sleeping and couchette cars of the ÖBB.”
