Ilford station will undergo a major overhaul as part of the Crossrail programme following the station design go-ahead by Redbridge Council.

Ilford station will undergo a major overhaul as part of the Crossrail programme following the station design go-ahead by Redbridge Council.

The prominent new station will be delivered in order to prepare the station for Elizabeth line services. Improvements will include longer platforms, improved lighting, signage, customer information points, CCTV and overhead information screens.
The building itself will be bright and spacious with a glass façade allowing natural light flood into the station. Furthermore, there will be a larger ticket hall with a wide entrance and more ticket gates. New lifts with also provide step-free access from street level to all platforms.

Matthew White, Crossrail Surface Director said: “The striking façade, spacious ticket hall and new lifts will making travelling through Ilford station a vastly improved experience for the thousands of passengers who use it every day.”
A further detailed design will now be carried out, with the contract for the construction of the station to be awarded by Network Rail this year. Work is expected to get underway in early 2018 and to take around 18 months to complete.
Matthew Steele, Crossrail Programme Director at Network Rail, added: “We are delivering major upgrades to the track, signalling and stations between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield to prepare for the introduction of new trains from May. The approval of the proposed design for a new station building at Ilford is another major milestone in the transformation of this vital stretch of railway.”
From May 2017, the first new Elizabeth line trains will be gradually introduced between Shenfield in Essex and Liverpool Street main line station. From May 2019, up to 12 trains an hour will allow passengers from Ilford to travel right through central London.
