Coordinator Europe, International Union of Railways (UIC)
Simon Fletcher is Coordinator Europe at the UIC – the International Union of Railways. Simon joined the UIC in 2003 on secondment from Southern in the UK.
With a background in operations and safety and many roles in the UK including as Operations Director and Head of Safety and Standards of a train operating company, Simon has spent much of the recent past utilising that experience in contributing to the development of interoperability and safety management systems of the European railway system. He spent two years as part of the AEIF team, the forerunner to the European Railway Agency.
Simon is a member of the UIC Board of Directors and as Coordinator Europe he works closely with the some 65% of the UIC’s member companies who are European-based.
As the UIC’s ‘man in Brussels’ Simon is able to interface with the other rail associations in developing the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the European railway system.
In previous lives Simon has had experience in the preparation of operational rules and the setting of standards at national level and the development of international operations as one of the pioneers of interoperability at Eurostar. In a very much earlier phase of his career, he was a train driver as well as a driver tutor.
