The first line in Croatia to be equipped with European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) / ETCS (European Train Control System) technology has started commercial operation. Bombardier’s INTERFLO 250 ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 system is now operating on the upgraded 33.5 km section of the Pan European Corridor X. The corridor from Vinkovci to Tovarnik enables train speeds of up to160 km/h. Adding to Bombardier’s global ERTMS references, this latest commissioning marks another Bombardier ERTMS solution operating in Europe.

Bombardier Transportation was responsible for the design, delivery and commissioning of the signalling system for the line. It includes the latest generation BOMBARDIER EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlocking (CBI) system and wayside equipment, and certification of the system for operation in Croatia was required. This milestone follows the successful delivery of EBI Gate level crossing systems for the same line.

Peter Cedervall, President, Rail Control Solutions, Bombardier Transportation, said: “As well as introducing our ETCS technology to a new market, this is an important new reference for Bombardier for our significant ERTMS portfolio. As part of the upgrade on a section of an interoperable corridor, which will enhance travel and transport links across Europe, our technology is contributing to the development of the national rail network, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Croatian Railways.”

With a strong presence in the development of ERTMS/ETCS technology, Bombardier’s solutions are operating or being delivered on more than 2,500 vehicles and 15,000 km of track, in 16 countries. The INTERFLO 450 Level 2 solution has been running on the highest speed ERTMS-equipped lines in China since 2009. It recently received permission for commercial operation on the Amsterdam-Utrecht line in the Netherlands, one of the busiest mainlines in Europe, and was inaugurated on Sweden’s first high speed ERTMS Level 2 line, the Botniabanan, in 2010. The technology is also implemented in Korea, Taiwan and Spain.

As part of extensive framework agreements in Sweden and Norway, Bombardier is delivering further onboard and wayside technology for ERTMS roll-out, including the world’s first Regional ERTMS application – the INTERFLO 550 solution on the Vasterdalsbanan.

Bombardier has also been awarded contracts for the first ERTMS technology in Algeria and Poland, as well as a project in Hungary.

Bombardier Transportation’s Rail Control Solutions portfolio covers the whole range of BOMBARDIER CITYFLO mass transit solutions, from manual to fully automatic, as well as communications-based systems. It also provides INTERFLO mainline solutions, from conventional to European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 systems. Bombardier provides a complete palette of wayside and onboard signalling products.
