Cummins at InnoTrans with ultra-clean diesel power

QSK95 returns to InnoTrans as the prime mover for the Siemens® Charger™…
Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) will showcase ultra-clean 15-, 19- and 95-liter diesel engines on the stand at InnoTrans, Sept. 23-26. Delivering 400 hp (298 kW) to 4400 hp (3281 kW), the engines offer quieter operation and increased fuel economy while meeting vehicle targets for high speed, rapid acceleration and extended life-to-overhaul.
QSK95 returns to InnoTrans in 2014 with a 4400 hp rating, having been named the prime mover for Siemens’ Charger locomotive. The diesel-electric passenger locomotive recently won a three-state, 35-unit initial order for passenger locomotives in the United States. With its 4400-hp rating, the QSK95 prime mover achieves the highest output of any 16-cylinder high-speed diesel, and is capable of a top speed of 125 mph (201 km/hr). On the freight side, a 4200-hp (3132 kW) QSK95 repower project is underway, and will operate in commercial service with Indiana Rail Road Co. The QSK95 combines Cummins latest-generation Modular Common Rail Fuel System (MCRS) with quad-turbocharging and integral Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment to deliver reduced noise, excellent response and ultra-low-emissions capability to the rail market.
In addition to the QSK95, Cummins will have the QSK19 on the stand. Popular in underfloor installations, the QSK19 engine powers hundreds of diesel multiple unit (DMU) railcars around the globe. Rated at 760 hp (567kW), the QSK19 provides lower operating costs and reduced emissions without sacrificing vehicle targets for high speed, rapid acceleration and extended life-to-overhaul.
Also on display, Cummins QSX15, with ratings from 400 hp (298 kW) to 600 hp (447kW), is ideal for use in switcher/shunter applications where multiple-engine designs allow it to provide power-on-demand response to varying load factors, resulting in fuel savings and a reduced carbon footprint. The first ultra-low-emissions demonstration project – an NREX 2015 genset switcher featuring twin-QSX15 engines that provide 1200 hp (895 kW) of installed power – has been up and running since 2013.
In order to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations worldwide, Cummins ultra-low-emissions engines incorporate SCR exhaust aftertreatment in the exhaust stream to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions to extremely low levels. That approach enables the engine combustion recipe to focus on reducing particulate matter (PM) and improving fuel efficiency, as well as delivering increased reliability and durability by allowing the engine to operate in a lower range of cylinder pressures and temperatures as compared with engine solutions making use of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Designed by Cummins, SCR offers a highly adaptable configuration, allowing it to occupy a space claim very similar to that of exhaust silencers typically used today, and enabling a drop-in capability for both new and repowered vehicles.
