Rail services between Nottingham, Newark and Lincoln will be boosted thanks to a £2 million package announced by the Department for Transport (DfT) today.

The package of timetable improvements, supported by regional and local authority funding partners, will benefit passengers using the Nottingham to Lincoln train service operated by East Midlands Trains (EMT).

The funding will allow for a number of upgrade services, including an additional 24 trains, more frequent and faster journey times and extra carriages to complement extra morning and evening peak trains.

Thousands of passengers and local communities along the Nottingham, Newark Castle and Lincoln route are expected to benefit when the new services are launched in May 2015.

The proposal are part of the DfT’s ‘Rail investment strategy’ which was announced in 2012 and aims to improve passenger experiences of train travel, upgrade stations and tracks and increase train capacity.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said:

“I know how important good rail links are for communities like Newark and Lincoln, which is why we are investing record amounts to deliver better services across the country and boost growth as part of our long-term economic plan.

Having visited the region this summer, I was struck by the case for making these improvements and I am pleased that passengers will soon benefit from these additional services and faster journey times.”

As part of the additional services, there will be 11 additional stops at Hykeham each day, extra services at Carlton and Burton Joyce, on route to Newark Castle, and quicker journeys will operate on 16 Nottingham to Lincoln services.
