Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a €500 million contract to deliver 26 additional Coradia Max double-decker trains to the Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW). The order also includes long-term maintenance of the vehicles until the end of 2055, ensuring reliable operation for decades. The new trains are scheduled for delivery from mid to late 2028 and are part of a broader option contingent agreed in May 2022, when Alstom initially supplied 130 Coradia Max trains. At that time, the contract allowed for up to 100 additional trains.
Tim Dawidowsky, President for the Central and Northern Europe region at Alstom, said the expansion will provide passengers with more capacity, comfort, and speed in regional transport. “As a partner for long-term maintenance and servicing, we will make a decisive contribution to the reliable operation of the vehicles for decades to come,” he added. Winfried Hermann, Minister of Transport of Baden-Württemberg, emphasised that the investment of around €3 billion for a total of 156 state-of-the-art trains strengthens the state’s position in Germany and meets rising passenger demand.
The new Coradia Max trains will be gradually phased in from December 2026 and deployed on Regionalexpress and Metropolexpress lines in Baden-Württemberg, including rail network 35’s Lot 1 and Lot 2 (Stuttgart-Bodensee-Netz). They will serve DB Regio Baden-Württemberg and Arverio, providing efficient connections across the region. With a top speed of 200 km/h, the trains offer the fastest travel experience in German regional rail, while maintaining energy efficiency. Each four-car train consists of two double-decker control cars and two single-deck intermediate cars, with a total of 380 seats.
Passenger comfort is a priority, with spacious lounge, conference, and family areas, multi-purpose compartments for luggage, prams, and bicycles, wide single-leaf doors for fast boarding, and barrier-free access for travellers with reduced mobility. Modern signalling and automation technology are integrated as part of the “Digital Hub Stuttgart” project, Germany’s first digitised railway hub. The trains also feature powerful air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, charging stations, and reading lamps.
Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance programme will support the fleet throughout its lifecycle, providing technical support and fully outsourced maintenance solutions. With over 35,500 vehicles maintained worldwide, Alstom is a trusted partner for both Alstom and non-Alstom assets. The Coradia Max modular design allows operators to customise interiors and configurations, offering high-speed, sustainable, and passenger-focused transport. With this expansion, Baden-Württemberg continues to pioneer climate-friendly, high-performance regional rail services.
