Laing O’Rourke, the international engineering and construction group, has today announced that in a three-way joint venture with leading Chinese contractors Hsin Chong and Paul Y, it has secured a £260m rail infrastructure contract as part of the construction of the Express Rail Link for MTR in Hong Kong.

The joint venture has been awarded Contract 810B for the construction of the southern portion of the West Kowloon Terminus, adjacent to Kowloon Station and Austin Station. Laing O’Rourke led the joint venture bid team with key company personnel now leading the project delivery, estimating and planning.

The team’s previous experience on major rail civil engineering works with particular emphasis on large scale deep excavation and basement construction, a willingness to work in a partnering environment with shared project commitment, and a strategy to deliver an innovative Engineering Solution within a fiercely competitive market, imparted upon the client a high degree of confidence which proved to be a winning combination.

This project complements the previous award of contract 811A on the MTR’s massive Express Rail Link project, to deliver the West Kowloon Terminus Approach Tunnels (North), in joint venture with Bachy Soletanche.

Commenting on the announcement, Laing O’Rourke Chairman & Chief Executive, Ray O’Rourke said “The contract win clearly demonstrates the Group’s growing global capabilities in rail infrastructure, and is further evidence of the progress being made to build a dynamic business and establish a major presence in the Hong Kong region, in line with our 2020 strategy.”
