Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation, leading a consortium with Belam Riga, has won a contract for the construction and upgrade of the signalling and associated infrastructure systems in the Bolderaja region of Latvia. Bombardier will deliver its INTERFLO 200 solution to Latvian Railways (LDz) on a section of the Bolderaja – Zasulauks line, which connects the capital city Riga with the Boldoraja and Riga harbour area. The total contract is valued at approximately 9.5 million LVL (13.6 million euro, $ 18.2 million US), with Bombardier’s share valued at approximately 3.7 million LVL (5.3 million euro, $ 7.1 million US).

In addition to the design, installation, testing and commissioning of the INTERFLO 200 mainline solution, Bombardier will supply its BOMBARDIER EBI Lock 950 R4 computer-based interlocking (CBI), EBI Screen 2000 centralized traffic control (CTC), and EBI Gate 2000 level crossing systems. Delivery is scheduled to be completed within 33 months. Bombardier is the largest provider of CBI and CTC systems to the Latvian rail industry, which it entered in 1998. Its state-of-the-art technology controls and monitors more than 800 points, 1,600 signals, 1,700 track circuits, and 120 level crossing systems.

Peter Cedervall, President Rail Control Solutions, Bombardier Transportation, said: “We have delivered INTERFLO 200 solutions all around the world, including in Latvia. Our reputation in the market as a responsive partner and our competitive price has secured this project, and reflects the trust the customer has in our solutions and the strong relationship we have built in this market.”

INTERFLO 200 signalling solutions are typically used for busy, mainline networks, where headways are reduced and higher safety levels are required. They can be complemented with a national automatic train protection (ATP) system and can later be upgraded to European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) operation. INTERFLO 200 solutions operate around the world, for example in Brazil, Russia, Thailand and across Europe.

The future success of urban centres rests on re-defining the way people move within and between these expanding social and economic hubs. Bombardier’s portfolio of rail control solutions reduces the constraints of current networks. It covers the whole range of BOMBARDIER CITYFLO mass transit solutions, from manual to fully automatic, as well as communications-based systems. It also provides INTERFLO mainline solutions, from conventional to ERTMS Level 2 systems. Bombardier also provides a complete palette of wayside and onboard signalling products.
