In order to support the integration of future technologies across the Sydney rail network, a new digital systems facility is being built at the Rail Technology Campus, Chullora, as part of the $831 million first-stage investment to transform the Sydney Trains network.

A spokesperson for Transport for New South Wales said: “This technology is a key enabler towards achieving the goals of Future Transport 2056, delivering increased capacity and significant performance, cost and safety benefits for both passenger and freight services.”

The facility has been designed to allow new technologies to be tested and integrated into a simulated environment without the risk of disrupting the rail network. The objective is for the facility to replace legacy signalling and train control systems with modern, internationally-proven, intelligent systems. It will also provide learning and development areas for staff, showcasing key features of the new technology.

The Digital Systems Programme is the next phase of Transport for New South Wales’ More Trains, More Services programme. Other developments include replacing trackside signalling equipment and introducing a Traffic Management System.

The planned completion date for the new build is 2021, with the hope that it will also be fully operational by this time.
