Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has secured a €62 million contract through its joint venture with Indian Railways, Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited, to deliver maintenance services for WAG-12B electric locomotives at Indian Railways’ Sabarmati locomotive depot.

Awarded by Indian Railways, the contract covers maintenance activities for the remaining 300 locomotives yet to be delivered under the original 800-unit contract signed with Alstom in 2015. The agreement runs until February 2031 and includes both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to meet strict availability and reliability targets.

“It is an honour to be Indian Railways’ partner of choice again, as it is reflective of the legacy established by MELPL and Alstom. Over the last decade we have worked collaboratively with the IR organization in supporting their freight revolution vision. We are thrilled to be trusted, for our remarkable maintenance capabilities and our reliability and availability track record”, said Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India.

The maintenance scope includes material supply, locomotive washing, logistics, remote diagnostics and servicing of essential depot infrastructure. It also incorporates Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance offering, which provides comprehensive support designed to maximise locomotive uptime.

To minimise downtime and ensure fast response, Prompt Response Teams will be deployed at strategic locations. These teams will be equipped with specialised tools and critical spare parts, allowing issues to be addressed quickly and efficiently. As part of the contract, Alstom will also continue its extensive skills development programme, building on the training already provided to more than 22,000 Indian Railways staff.

This contract complements Alstom’s existing operations at its ultramodern maintenance depots in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and Nagpur, Maharashtra. These facilities currently maintain the first 500 WAG-12B locomotives using advanced technologies to ensure high availability and operational reliability.

The Prima T8 WAG-12B electric locomotives form part of a landmark €3.5 billion contract awarded to Alstom in 2015. The 12,000 horsepower, double-section locomotives are capable of hauling loads of up to 6,000 tonnes and play a key role in India’s Green and Digital mobility transition. By replacing diesel traction, they significantly reduce carbon emissions while boosting freight capacity and efficiency across the rail network.
