By launching its 123rd refurbished train into service, Northern – the second largest train operator in the UK – has now refurbished more than 50 per cent of its trains.
The refurbished trains form part of Northern’s wide-ranging plan to enhance customer journeys by improving all aspects of its network.
The wide-scale deployment of new and refurbished-like-new carriages will mean the retirement of some of the oldest trains on the network.
Passengers may soon be able to find out which carriages have available seats, and if the toilets are operational and vacant, before they board the train.
Working in partnership with Northern and TransPennine Express, the Smart on Rail project is a crucial first step in the delivery of an integrated smart travel system for the whole of the North of England.
